School Employee Wellness grants are awarded for up to $100,000 over 5 years. The Trust works with grantees to develop effective, engaging and sustainable School Employee Wellness programs. OEA Choice Trust recognizes school districts, education service districts and community colleges face many diverse health and wellness issues; that’s why our School Employee Wellness Grant Program allows the flexibility to tailor programs to best match the unique goals and needs of local districts to promote the well-being of all staff.

Note for Charter Schools:
To be eligible to apply for an OEA Choice Trust School Employee Wellness Grant, the interested charter school must demonstrate that their charter school was established from an existing public school district and the entire district converted to charter school status. Interested charter schools are required to contact Asta Garmon at email@example.com before applying to confirm they meet this requirement.

FRAMEWORK OF PROVEN STRATEGIES AND BEST PRACTICES
The Framework is a guide created to inform school employees about different strategies for SEW program success. Its purpose is to help guide education leaders, employees and stakeholders through their decision making process when planning employee health and well-being initiatives.
HOW TO DEVELOP SMART OBJECTIVES
SMART Objectives are a part of the grant application Action Plan. SMART Objectives can strengthen your goals for the program by making them Specific, Measurable, Action Oriented, Relevant and on a Timeline. Keeping SMART Objectives focused can also help you collect relevant data.

SCHOOL EMPLOYEE WELLNESS GRANT FAQs
Who is eligible to apply?
To be eligible, an applicant must be an Oregon K-12 school district, education service district or community college. The scope of the project, e.g. school district, school(s) within a district, campus or division of a community college is up to the grant applicant.
How much funding is available?
OEA Choice Trust School Employee Wellness Grant awards are a maximum of $100,000 for school employee wellness programs that will be implemented within 5 years. Please note: this is a multiyear grant award and annual grant funding requests are limited to a maximum of $30,000 per grant year.
Grantees will be required to provide a minimum of 50% in matching funds through in-kind donations and local contributions. In-kind donations can be donated goods, services, equipment, non-cash items, donated space, or volunteer hours from your organization or community partnerships. Local contributions are financial contributions provided by your organization or community partnerships.
What are the major funding priorities of the Wellness Program?
OEA Choice Trust recognizes many diverse health and wellness issues face different district and school locations; that’s why our School Employee Wellness Grant Program is designed to allow the flexibility to design and tailor employee wellness programs to best match the unique goals and needs of local districts to promote the physical, emotional and social well-being of all staff.
Funding Priorities for School Employee Wellness Grants:
- Improve the health, well-being and resilience of school employees by focusing on a holistic approach that includes the essential elements of well-being: OEA Choice Trust’s School Employee Health and Well-being Model
- Purpose: Having a sense of meaning, being motivated to give back to others and the world in some positive way
- Physical: Having good health and enough energy to get things done daily
- Social: Having supportive relationships and fostering social belonging and connectedness
- Emotional: The way you feel, the way you function and flourish
- Financial: Managing one’s economic life to reduce stress and increase security
- Build a culture of health and well-being at the workplace by implementing a comprehensive school employee wellness program district wide. Key factors that influence creating a healthy workplace culture include: OEA Choice Trust’s Fostering School Employee Health, Well-being and Resilience: Framework of Proven Strategies and Best Practices
- Policies, practices and environments that promote the social, emotional and physical well-being of employees
- Active leadership support that communicates the value of employee well-being and demonstrates that it is a priority to the district/ESD/community college
- Social environment that promotes staff health and well-being as the norm rather than the exception at their school
What is the process for applying for a grant?
Is someone available to meet with us to discuss the grant proposal?
Yes, we are happy to discuss your proposal; however we will not be able to tell you whether the application is successful until after the Board of Trustees have reviewed and made their award decision. We also encourage you to e-mail or phone us with questions about the grant application and review process prior to the due date.

How are decisions on proposals made?
The OEA Choice Trust Board of Trustees will evaluate and approve grant awards. Issues central to OEA Choice Trust’s evaluations of proposed projects include:
- The strength of district, school, and union leadership support
- The degree the school staff has been involved in developing the wellness program
- Whether the project addresses significant health needs and interests of the school community
- The goals and objectives are clear, achievable and align with the school community health needs
- How well the project fits within OEA Choice Trust’s funding priorities
- The potential impact of the project to improve/promote school employee health & well-being
Are there things that specifically will not be funded?
See the grant application guidelines/Terms and conditions section which lists out what cannot be funded. Generally we will not fund:
- Funds requested for political or religious purpose
- Items already purchased
- Activities already taking place
- Deficit funding
